It was a case of "Lights, Camera, Action!" when Catholic Earthcare Australia visited St Patrick's Primary Blacktown to film a video for the United Nations International Year of Light and Soils. The students really did shine as with confidence, they discussed the aspects of their outdoor learning space which are most important to them. The Kitchen Garden Group shared a good general knowledge about the vegetables, herbs and flowers which they have planted and nurtured, with their teachers and they were able to 'act out' how plants grow from seeds to maturity!With the guidance of a generous parent, the harvested produce was cooked, the table was set and adorned with a yellow St Patrick Rose, picked from the garden. The delicious stir fry was then appreciated by the 'Future Chefs'!

When the work is done the garden will have a rest, under the watchful care of St Francis, St Patrick (the rose!) the Scarecrow and it looks like even the Police are on hand to ensure that all is peaceful and harmonious!

Mother's Day Profit!

Students at St Patrick's Primary, Blacktown re-potted Aloe Vera plants and Chocolate mint for their mums for Mothers' Day. The extra plants were split and potted. With the assistance of one of the mums, some of the students sold the Aloe Vera plants to parents at the school. The profit was $70,which has been used to buy some much needed gardening gloves. What a great result!

 

Crunch & Sip!

Fruit and Vegetables to Feed the School at St. Patrick’s, Primary Blacktown

The school was generously given a small grant from the Department of Health through Crunch & Sip, to further increase the healthy food choices at break time. It was  decided to plant extra fruit and vegetables in the Kitchen Garden. Lots of of snow peas, lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers and carrots were planted for the students at St. Patrick’s to enjoy for fruit break!

After  a couple of months and many successful harvests, every student at St.Patrick’s has been given the opportunity to enjoy the produce from the garden during their fruit break time. All the students have enjoyed eating fresh and organically grown produce!
